Signals Arts Explorers: John Muir Award- a group of Essex teenagers learn diverse media skills alongside their conservation activities

Signals is an award winning arts and education charity based in Colchester, Essex. Their community projects enable disadvantaged groups to work on production projects, giving participants digital media skills and most importantly a voice.

Throughout 2018 Signals has been working with groups of young people to engage with the natural world around them, on the Heritage Lottery Funded project ‘The Year’.  Over the summer young people joined workshops at Fingringhoe Wick Nature Reserve, where they produced different visual and audio works based on their observations of the natural surroundings. The project aimed to promote healthy living and the positive effects of spending time with nature for the young people’s physical and mental wellbeing.

They also raised their awareness of the place nature has in maintaining the overall balance of our environment and worked towards achieving their John Muir Discovery Award as part of their experience, sharing what they had learned with others through a variety of filmed and recorded media.
