Trust objects to repowering and extension of Ben Aketil Wind Farm
In principle the Trust supports the repowering of onshore wind farms as a means to achieving Scotland's net-zero targets without the further destruction of wild places. However, we believe that the proposal to repower and extend the existing Ben Aketil Wind Farm fails to realise the potential benefits of repowering.
An estimated 117,582m³ of peat would need to be excavated to construct the new turbines and access tracks, which are all sited on nationally important class 1 peatland. This is almost three times more than other larger onshore wind farms also sited on peatland.
We have objected on the basis that the development would have an unacceptable impact on high quality peatland.
