Human right to a healthy environment
The Scottish Government has been gathering views on proposals for a new Human Rights Bill. The proposed rights include a right to a healthy environment, incorporating this right into Scots Law for the first time.
Recognising the right to a healthy environment as a human right of everyone in Scotland would mean people in Scotland would have a strengthened legislative basis for calling out harm to wild places and for holding public bodies to account where they are failing in their duty of care to protect the environment, which can coincide with failing to protect wild places.
