Help us prevent wild fires
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to exercise caution in rural environments and has issued a warning of ‘extreme’ risk for wildfires.
Sadly, fire crews have been responding to large wildfires across Scotland over the past week. With the spring break upon us and some beautiful weather, we want to ensure everyone can enjoy our wild places safely – and that we protect fragile habitats from the ravages of wildfires.
Most wildfires are caused by accident, a cigarette or campfire ember can all too easily catch light in dry conditions and turn quickly into something much bigger and more dangerous.
Wildfires can very quickly take hold and spread in woodland, on grassland or moorland, destroying wildlife habitats and burning valuable carbon stores in the form of trees and peatland. Wildlife, protected woodland and sites of special scientific interest can all be devastated by wildfires, as well as putting people and their homes at serious risk.
Keep safe and protect our wild places:
- Never start a fire outside in woodland or in dry conditions and follow advice of the Scottish Outdoor Access Code
- Be vigilant if using stoves and barbecues – and try to find an alternative
- Always extinguish cigarettes fully and dispose of them carefully
- If you see a wildfire call 999 and ask for the Fire Service
