Wild Moment: Pete Barron

Pete heads to Scandinavia for a taste of 'real wildness'.

We often have to seek real wildness away from UK. For me that’s always Norway. Crossing mountain ranges especially A-B routes where the unpredictability of snow and weather requires thinking in the hoof.

A recent trip across Skarvheimen with my daughter was just such a trip. Temperatures from +4 to -22c, ice after a thaw, poor visibility, ski over an unseen cornice, wind and then heavy snow described as Type 2 fun by my daughter!!

Social evenings in cabins with other like minded skiers and sharing space with lemmings, ptarmigan, ravens and hare.

But then…. Blue bird sky perfection. The benefits of such a trip, although not for everyone, are incalculable.
