Wild Moment: Terry McCabe

"If you're very lucky the distant skirl of the pipes on the wind..." a poem about empty places celebrates life from the mountain top

The Empty Places

Atop a Ridge with wind in my hair
See the Valley below changed
From dark to light by drifts of clouds
Forests
Bogs
Moors
Remote lochs
Velvet black mountains
Lashing of waves of grass on the valley below
Clouds of purple heather on mountainside
The warmth of the sun on your face
The trees dressed in the shape of the wind
And the race of shadows across the hill
Purple clouds on land and sky
If you're very lucky the distant skirl of the pipes on the wind
These make the Empty Places
That attract me as a moth to the flame
