Wild moment: Brian Davies

Author and trustee of the Cambrian Mountains Society, Brian Davies, explains the rich layers of meanings behind milltir sgwar / my square mile.

The turbulent times of the virus force us to isolate, causing us to stay home and perhaps appreciate our square mile. The term milltir sgwar translates into English as 'our/my square mile', but in the strength and richness of the Welsh it means much more.

The term connects us to our immediate area where the familiarity of landscape and community is rooted and comforted; and the current pandemic may lead us to reflect on the certainty of the pleasure of another dawn and a day of activity that may include the simple pleasure - from a local walk taking us to dusk and sunset - with the hope of certainty from another day ahead. It is completely different from the financial obsession of London square mile!

Bro fy Mebyd is another powerful term in our language that causes us to reflect on the land of our youth and the formative experiences experienced there. The English translation - 'land of my youth' - does not convey the deep and emotional relationships inherent in this simple term through the idiomatic and almost esoteric connections it conveys.

Both of these terms contribute to understanding the unique Welsh term – cynefin – which conveys:

• a sense of the relationship between individuals and their place of birth and the environment in which they live, with which they naturally become familiar.
• a sense of place and belonging with a timely, physical, cultural and spiritual familiarity and roots and connects us to a community and its shared history that is both natural and intuitive.

Our personal cultural heritage is unique and irreplaceable, which places the responsibility of preserving it on the present generation, to maintain and give it for the benefit of future generations. Our cultural heritage includes tangible culture, intangible culture and natural heritage.

This connectedness is long-standing and deeply rooted in our Welsh psyche. It is a powerful tool that will help us survive and overcome this current challenge to our history. That memorable phrase “again sunshine on a hill” from the old poem will motivate us to look at our own hill, and look positively, for a better future in a new normal.

Now if things go wrong, things go wrong
And your garden grows weeds;

Once again sunshine comes on a hill.

Fy Milltir Sgwâr

Mae cyfnod cythryblus y feirws yn gorfodi ni i ynysu ac yn peri inni aros adref  a efallai i werthfawrogi  ein milltir sgwar. Mae’r term milltir sgwar yn cyfieithi i’r Saesneg fel our/ my square mile ond yng ngryfder a cyfoethogrwydd yr iaith mae yn golygu llawer mwy. Mae'r term yn ein cysylltu â'n hardal agos lle mae gwreiddiau a chysur yng nghyfarwyddrwydd tirwedd a chymuned, a gall y pandemig presennol beri inni fyfyrio ar sicrwydd pleser gwawr arall a diwrnod o weithgaredd a all gynnwys y pleser syml. o daith gerdded leol a mynd â ni i'r cyfnos a machlud, a'r gobaith o sicrwydd o ddiwrnod arall i ddod. Mae’n hollol wahanol i obsesiwn ariannol  milltir sgwâr Llundain.

Bro fy Mebyd yw term pwerus arall yn ein hiaith sy'n peri inni fyfyrio ar dir ein hieuenctid a'r profiadau ffurfiannol a brofwyd gennym yno. Nid yw'r cyfieithiad i'r Saesneg o Land of my youth yn cyfleu'r perthynas dwfn ac emosiynol sy'n gynhenid ​​yn y term syml hwn trwy y cysylltiadau idiomatig a bron esoterig y mae'n eu cyfleu. Mae'r ddau derm hyn yn cyfrannu at ddeall y term unigryw Cymraeg – cynefin.

Mae ganddo ddealltwriaeth fel perthynas rhwng unigolion a man eu genedigaeth a'r amgylchedd y maent yn byw ynddo ac y maent yn naturiol yn ymgyfarwyddo ag ef. Mae'n cyfleu ymdeimlad o le a pherthyn gyda chynefindra a gwreiddiau sydd yn amserol, corfforol, diwylliannol ac ysbrydol. Mae ein treftadaeth ddiwylliannol bersonol yn unigryw ac yn anadferadwy, sy'n gosod y cyfrifoldeb o'i chadw ar y genhedlaeth bresennol, i'w chynnal a'i rhoi er budd cenedlaethau'r dyfodol. Mae ein treftadaeth ddiwylliannol yn cynnwys diwylliant diriaethol, diwylliant anghyffyrddadwy a threftadaeth naturiol.

Mae'r cysylltiad hwn yn hirsefydlog ac wedi'i wreiddio'n ddwfn yn ein psyche Cymreig.  Offeryn pwerus a fydd yn ein helpu i oroesi a goresgyn yr her bresennol hon i'n hanes. Bydd yr ymadrodd dyfynbrisus daw eto haul ar fryn o'r hen gerdd yn ein cymell i edrych ar ein bryn unigol ni ac edrych yn gadarnhaol at ddyfodol gwell mewn normal newydd.
