Call for two co-opted Trustees

The Trust is the leading voice for the protection and conservation of wild places in the UK. We have ambitious targets and are looking to bring new skills to our Board through co-option of two Trustees.

Skills and experience are sought in four key areas:

  • Environmental governance, ideally with international awareness
  • Environmental education, ideally with understanding of strategic approaches
  • Public policy
  • Influencing social change

Essential criteria needed for Trustees include: awareness of the value of wild places within the man-made landscapes of the UK; demonstrated ability to think strategically; and willingness to join the Trust if not current a member.

We also require the ability to commit to the role for an initial period of one year, involving reading paperwork in advance of attending around seven full-day meetings. These will include four Board meetings, usually in Edinburgh and in hybrid format, and three topical discussion meetings in person at locations around the UK.

We welcome applications from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds, cultures, perspectives, and experiences welcomed to support our work on behalf of wild places.

Please include the following in your application:

  • Completed Code of Conduct declaration: Trustee_Code_of_Conduct_declaration_-_updated_080524_(PDF)_original.pdf (johnmuirtrust.org).
  • Candidate statement – share in no more than 500 words your suitability to be a John Muir Trust Trustee, bringing experience in one or more of the areas of environmental governance; environmental education; public policy; or influencing social change. Your experience could include any relevant degree-level qualifications or training you have completed, past/current employment and volunteering.

Please submit your application by Wednesday 28 August to returning.officer@johnmuirtrust.org.

Successful applicants will become full members of the Board from the AGM in September 2024 until the AGM in 2025, with the possibility of extending this term by being co-opted again, or standing for election by the Membership as Trustees.

To arrange an informal discussion ahead of application or for any questions on the role of a Trustee, please also email returning.officer@johnmuirtrust.org.
